Some helpful tips to remember when determining if your brakes require maintenance are:

Mileage

Most brake pads need to be replaced between 50,000 – 70,000 miles. Some may even only last 25,000 miles. With this in mind, it helps to keep a tab on your car’s current mileage and consult your owner’s manual for more detailed information so that you can keep up to date on the condition of your car’s brake pads.

Appearance

Suppose you can’t get a clear gauge on how many miles you have used your brake pads for? You can do a manual check for wear and tear by looking at your brake pads through the spaces between the spokes in your wheel. The outer pad should be up against the metal rotor and you should see one-fourth of an inch of the pad. If the pad is thinner than that, you should get it replaced as soon as possible.

Noise

If your brake pads are starting to go, you should be able to hear a high pitched screeching sound when you press your foot on the brake. The noise may be faint, but regardless, this is one of the clearer signs that you should get your brakes replaced.

Now that you know how to spot when your brakes need to be replaced, the next time you experience any of these warning signs, be sure to contact us at Brakes On The Go NJ and we’ll be there same-day to replace your brakes and get you on your way.
